Cairn Guide: Basic Climbing Mechanics & Survival Tips (Part 1)

Feb 01, 2026 10 min read

The reviews are in, and Cairn is incredible. It’s a climbing game that demands precision, patience, and a bit of nerve. If you are ready to touch eternity and feel like every limb matters, welcome to the mountain.

In this Gameplay Walkthrough, we tackle the tutorial walls, learn the unique "spider" controls, and survive our first night on the rock face.

The Basics: Wall 1 to Wall 3

The game starts with a simple goal: "Reach the highest holds on Wall 1 to Wall 3 to learn the basics." It sounds easy, but Cairn is a simulation, not an arcade jumper.

1. Independent Limb Control

Everything is manual. You don't just "climb"; you control each hand and foot independently.

  • Select a limb with the stick.
  • Move it to a hold.
  • Grip.

Tip: The game usually auto-selects the best limb to move, but you can switch manually if you need a specific setup.

2. The Stretch Mechanic

Wall 3 introduces the game's signature move. Sometimes, a hold is just out of reach.

  • High Foothold: Place your foot high.
  • Stretch: Hold the stick upwards to make Ava stretch her body.
  • Reach: Grab that distant ledge.

The First Real Climb: "Survivor" Mode

We chose Survivor Mode (Balanced). No automatic saves, and some assists are disabled. It’s the intended way to play, but it forces you to be careful.

Understanding Stamina & Health

Cairn's climbing mechanics revolve around a realistic stamina and health system. Understanding how these work is crucial for survival on the mountain.

The Stamina Bar Explained

Your stamina bar appears as a circular meter around your character. It depletes when you:

  • Hold difficult positions: Overhangs and one-handed grips drain stamina fast.
  • Stretch for distant holds: The further you reach, the more energy it costs.
  • Climb without resting: Continuous movement without breaks will exhaust you.

When stamina hits zero, your grip fails and you fall. Always watch for safe ledges or place a Piton before you're completely drained.

Managing Your Vitals

As you climb, you have to watch your vitals:

  • Stamina: Drains as you move or hold difficult positions.
  • Health: Taking a fall or hitting the wall hurts.
  • Status: Hunger and Thirst are real threats.

Warning: If you run out of stamina, you will fall. Find a safe ledge or place a Piton to rest.

Using Gear: Pitons and Chalk

You aren't climbing naked (figuratively). You have gear to help you survive.

  • Pitons: Place these into the rock to create a checkpoint. You have a limited supply, so use them wisely.
  • Chalk: Use it to improve grip strength on slippery surfaces.

We placed a Piton halfway up the first major wall after a sketchy slip. It saved us from restarting at the bottom.

Night Climbing

The sun sets fast in Cairn. Climbing at night changes everything.

  • Visibility: Drops to near zero.
  • Headlamp: Your only source of light.
  • Route Finding: It becomes much harder to spot the next hold.

Strategy: Move slowly at night. Double-check your holds before committing your weight.

"The Mountain Choosing You"

After a grueling climb, a near-death fall, and some questionable noodle consumption, we made it to the first summit. But as the game reveals... that was just the warm-up.
